So....Jax is feeling pretty good and comfortable about his new found home now after 6 days, and he's started testing. Testing: running the opposite way when you call him, testing:grabbing a shoe or leash and running away with it, pretty much seeing how far he can take it. Our vet said "get a hold of it before he's big, and really takes over"
We're on it. We've both become drill sergeant's for the time being. It seems to be working quite well. Except for being on duty, whenever he is out of his kennel.
And the angel turns into a little devil... :)
ReplyDeleteJust to comfort you, everyone goes through period of testing, completely natural!
Few tips:
-If you are pretty sure he wont come, don't even bother calling, just go and get him, but try to approach so that he wont think you are coming for him.
-Practice call-in so that in a safe environment with no other distractions one will hold the puppy while one shows him treats and runs away calling his name, after a short while when he is focused to the target the puppy is allowed to follow and will receive lots of praise and a treat. Repeat this several times and then try it when he is off leash, run away calling his name at the same time, can even hide a bit for making it more fun. He will think its a fun game and be more interested coming to you.
-If walking in a park, trail or forest hide several times during the walk behind a tree or a rock and make him keep an eye on you, so you wont suddenly disappear. Make him think he needs to follow and keep his eyes always on you when being outside so he wont be left alone.
Ha ha ha, he can be a little devil! But most of the time he's a sweet little boy! Just a couple of things he likes to push! I like your advice though, we shall give that a go!
DeleteThanks Anna! Hope all is well with you!
